Muamalah - Looks Simple or Showing Off?

Recently, the news in Indonesia has been busy with cases of flexing or showing off the assets of officials and their families. Of course, the act of showing off one's wealth is a disgusting act, especially since the property is considered as forbidden property.

The effect is that old posts on social media have begun to be deleted, in order to avoid investigations by netizens, maybe not even only online, offline—it could be that documents related to money games in government institutions have begun to be deleted or destroyed, so that investigations further information from anti-corruption agencies can be avoided as early as possible.

As camouflage, eventually the act of flexing turns into an act of humble bragging, from a life that looks luxurious to a simple one, but still shows that they are proud to have many possessions, even feel powerful, feel great even with humble words.

Show off

Not only today, the act of showing off wealth has existed since long ago, even Qarun was very proud of his wealth, saying "In fact I was only given that treasure, because of the knowledge that is in me", he was so arrogant, similar to some people today who are very proud of their wealth, as if it was because of their greatness that they obtained the treasure.

Looks Simple

On the other hand, there are also rich people who don't show off their wealth, they seem simple, but are extraordinarily curmudgeonly, covering up their wealth, so that the wealth only circulates in their family, even though in Surah Al-Hashr verse 7 "...so that the wealth does not circulate only among the rich among you."

With the simple pretext that they do not buy expensive and high-quality goods, even though in Muamalah what is not permissible is tabdzir, which is spending money for immorality, israf, which is spending excessively, and tariffs, which are extravagant to be arrogant and immoral.

While buying goods of good quality, which in fact are expensive, is of course permissible, as long as the item is really needed or has a purpose for it in a lawful way, meaning it is used for something lawful.

Looks Simple or Showing Off?

Thus, looking simple is also no better than flexing, in Surah Ad-Duha verse 11 "And against the favor of your Lord, then let you broadcast", and the hadith of the Prophet of Allah says "Verily Allah likes to see the appearance of the former favor of Allah to His servant" (Narrated by Tirmidhi).

So the most important thing is not arrogant, not riya', not hurting the hearts of others, nor filial piety, not covering and storing property, and property obtained in a halal way, so it includes halal property.
