Rich in Islam: More Than Just Material Purposes

The deeper a person is immersed in life, the higher his desire to succeed.

The current contemporary conditions, after going through the pandemic, are a turning point for many people to question the direction of their lives. They not only want to live better, but also want to realize their bigger dreams.

Millennials and generation Z, in particular, have to face the fact that life now and in the future, will be a very, very big challenge.

A study reported by one of the news portals*, explains that the Millennial generation must face a less supportive situation to become rich. Some of the reasons are poor market conditions, which limit opportunities for Millennials to increase wealth, in addition to the fact that property prices are getting higher, education costs are getting more expensive, making Millennials have more debt.

Such a situation should make us rethink, is wealth the main goal in life?

The author believes that the answer is that wealth, let alone being rich, is not the goal of human life in this world. Humans live in this world to worship Allah Azza wa Jalla, to become caliphs in the world, to be responsible for their leadership, and to be rewarded in the afterlife.

"And I did not create the jinn and humans except that they worship Me." (QS: Adz-Dzariyat: 56)
"(Remember) when your Lord said to the angels, "I will make a caliph on earth." (QS: Al-Baqarah: 30)

Wealth is a medium and a tool for humans to be able to worship Allah Azza wa Jalla, become a medium and a tool so that the duties of the Khalifah can be accomplished properly. Wealth is used to spread goodness, spread Islamic da'wah to all corners of the world, to strive in the way of Allah Azza wa Jalla.

Islam has provided ways and methods for humans to become rich, either through tijarah (trade), through mudharabah (capital), through syirkah (companies), and so on. Not only that, Islam has also provided its system so that humans have a great opportunity to become rich and prosperous, through a system of gold and silver coins (dinars and dirhams), through the establishment of the Baitul Mal institution, the abolition of taxes and customs, and so on.

So it is not surprising that many Muslims who were rich when Islam was applied kaffah, such as Abdurahman bin Auf, Uthman bin Affan (his wealth even exists today) Radhiyallahu anhuma, and so on. Even during the time of Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz, no one was entitled to receive zakat, in contrast to Europe which was then in the dark age (The Dark Age).

Therefore, if you want to follow the way of thinking of people today who have the goal of becoming rich, then getting rich is not just a material goal, but more than that, being rich also has non-material goals, because the muamalah contract in Islam, which is of the most types, is a contract of mutual assistance.
